Fire Extinguisher Inspection

Fire extinguisher guidelines require that you have your equipment professionally inspected, tested, and tagged annually. But since fire extinguishers are designed to be a quick-response means of defending your building against fires, they need to be able to work at a moment’s notice all year long! In addition to annual professional inspections, here are some things you can look at on your own each month to make sure your extinguishers will work.

Monthly Fire Extinguisher Inspections

Ensure fire extinguishers are located in their proper places – you should have dedicated areas of your building where fire extinguishers are clearly visible and easily accessible. Make sure everyone in your building knows where these location are.

Inspect for obvious physical damage – important things to look for include the safety pin and tamper seal, signs of corrosion or leakage, clogs in the nozzle, and cracks or dents in the extinguisher shell.

Check the pressure gauge – make sure the needle on the pressure gauge is in the green zone to indicate adequate pressure, but even if it is, lift the fire alarm to make sure it feels heavy enough – these two steps combined are the best way to ensure your extinguisher is ready to be used.

Point the operating instructions outward – the operating instructions and extinguisher nameplate must be legible and clearly visible at all times.

Check the date tag – if it is approaching a full year since your last professional fire extinguisher inspection, call Patriot Security to set up an inspection.

Initial and date the back of the tag – this will indicate that you performed the required inspection.

Fire Extinguisher Maintenance

Fire extinguishers are pretty durable. However, this is not always true – you may find that your fire extinguisher has bumps, dents, leaks or rust that can impair its ability to keep you safe at all times. If you notice a defect on your fire extinguisher, call Patriot Security! We can provide fire extinguisher maintenance that’s as basic or as advanced as you need to make sure your fire extinguisher will keep you safe at all times.

Fire Extinguisher Recharge

Have you recently discharged your fire extinguisher, even by just a tiny bit? Even if your fire extinguisher looks like it is mostly charged, you should never take chances—the difference between fully charged and mostly charged could be life and death.

Fire Extinguisher Recharge When You Need It

At Patriot Security, your safety is our number one concern— Any time you use your fire extinguisher, even if you accidentally release only a little bit, you need to have your fire extinguisher recharged—losing even just a few milliseconds of pressure or chemical extinguishant could result in faulty fire extinguisher operation and potentially a fire that does not get extinguished in time to save your building or property from devastating damage.

Fire Extinguisher Hydro-testing

Unused and maintained fire extinguishers should last a very long time, but let’s face it, nothing’s perfect. If your fire extinguisher is more than 12 years old, the NFPA and local authorities require you to have it hydro-tested or replaced. A fire extinguisher hydro-test will make sure the shell of your fire extinguisher has no cracks or leaks that can cause it to malfunction when you need it most. At Patriot Security, making sure your fire protection systems work properly when you need them is our number one priority.
